Western Gulf Collegiate Women’s Basketball Program IS NOT Post Grad

WGC is fundamentally different than Post Grad Basketball
.

What Is Post Grad Basketball?

"Post Grad Basketball" (or post-graduate/PG programs) is a gap year (often called a "fifth year") for high school graduates before starting college. It's designed for players that aren't quite ready to play at the college level and must signifcantly improve basketball skills through intense training and competition and/or boost academics (e.g., raise SAT/ACT scores, take college-prep classes, earn credits). The goal is almost always transitioning to a full college program afterward.

Key Differences Between WGC Athletics and Typical Post Grad Basketball

WGC is an ongoing independent college-level program, while post-grad is a transitional/preparatory gap year before true college enrollment.
  • Level and Status:

    • Post-grad: Pre-college/gap year (high school graduate - improves for college entry). Often plays at a prep/high-school-like level or vs. mixed opponents, but not full college status.
    • WGC: Actual college basketball (competes against other college teams). Players are enrolled in college simultaneously and earn college credits/degrees.

  • Academic Structure:

    • Post-grad: Usually tied to a specific prep school/academy with required classes (high school-level or dual enrollment) to improve transcripts/GPA/test scores for college admission.
    • WGC: No fixed academics - players choose any accredited college (online or otherwise). Focus is on flexibility and degree pursuit without program-imposed schooling.

  • Duration and Goal:

    • Post-grad: Typically 1-year temporary bridge to improve recruiting odds - transfer/move to NCAA/JUCO/NAIA college.
    • WGC: Multi-year potential (as long as eligible). It's a full college experience (with low fees and independence), not a stepping stone, though exposure could lead to transfers upward.

  • Competition and Exposure:

    • Post-grad: High-level but often vs. other prep/post-grad teams, some JUCOs; aimed at attracting college coaches.
    • WGC: Directly vs. top college opponents (mostly NJCAA D1); provides college game film and recruiting pipeline exposure in a college context.

  • Living/Commitment:

    • Post-grad: Often boarding with dorms/meals; structured like extended high school.
    • WGC: Players handle their own living (commute, on-campus at their college, etc.). More independent/adult-like.

  • Cost and Accessibility:

    • Post-grad: Can be expensive (tuition, boarding); some offer aid.
    • WGC: Very low athletic fees + potential for Pell Grant refunds; academic costs via chosen school (could be cheap community college) or subsidized through academic scholarships and other financial aid.
In short, if you're a high school grad looking for a one-year developmental gap to boost recruiting before committing to college, traditional post-grad programs fit better. WGC is more for players wanting to play real college basketball right away with maximum academic freedom and minimal restrictions/costs. It's essentially a unique, independent college pathway rather than a prep/bridge year. Back to Recruiting FAQs...
